“Before sin is forgiven, it must be repented of…Christ’s blood must wash our tears away, but repentance is a qualification, not a cause. He who is humbled for sin will value pardoning mercy the more.” (Chapter 1, p.10)
In Peter’s sermon at Pentecost, the crowd was convicted and cried out, “What should we do?” Peter’s response was, “Repent! And be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.” Repentance comes, as a gift from God, through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. Forgiveness, a result of repentance, is likewise a gift from God. Repentance does not cause us to be forgiven, as if we have any power or ability to achieve, earn, and cause the forgiveness we freely receive from our God.
